Pumpkin Day

Today we made the traditional pumpkin carving festivities a little bit more scientific by learning some basic pumpkin facts and then recording some information about our pumpkins.  I didn't actually tell the boys it was science, though. I said it was a "Jack O' Lympics" with a list of events.  We had the fun job of finding the winning pumpkin for each category: Heaviest weight? Widest circumference? Most lines? And all the pumpkins had a chance to sink or float in the kitchen sink.

The pumpkin data chart we used to fill out was originally given to me by my father, who taught for over 35 years.  You can download and print the PDF file by clicking HERE.

Meet the contestants of the Jack O'Lympics!!!

Event #1: Weight

Event #2:  Circumference

Event #3: Float or Sink

Event #4: Estimate how many seeds :-)

Then there was some carving... Ezra's: happy, mine: brace face, JP's: creepy, Dave's: surprised. (That little greenish pumpkin was the only fruit from our pumpkin plant this year...)

And baking pumpkin seeds...

I used this new recipe for caramelized pumpkin seeds.

Hope you're enjoying this time of year.
 Happy Halloween! :-)
