Numbers are Everywhere

Here are a few math resources and manipulatives that I've been using with JP recently:

Media:

Here Come the 1,2,3's CD/DVD They Might Be Giants: Lots of fun songs and quirky graphics! They also address "everything" and infinity...

UmiZoomi: This is t.v. program first aired the end of January on Nick Jr.  They address a variety of different math subjects, such as; measurements, shapes, temperature, time, number recognition, counting forwards and backwards, adding, subtracting... It always gives me ideas of what to reinforce during the day when those teachable moments occur. Click on the link above to find more info, games, and printable!

Manipulatives/Games:

Color cubes ($1 @Target): great for teaching patterns, adding, subtracting, grouping, and sorting...
White board clock: ($1@ Michael's Craft store) great for tracing numbers, and of course... learning how to tell time!

Paper Shape Craft: I got this idea from watching Umi Zoomi (the little boy, "Geo" puts shapes together to create things they need to complete their missions).  It's so simple! Just cut out different shapes out of construction paper and let your child create different pictures from them!  Great for naming shapes, and for understanding how various shapes together create different images.  Also nice for young children that can't get their little hands to draw what they want to draw yet... I thought about making patterns for JP to match the shapes over and create pictures.

Math around your house:
Calendars
Measuring Tape
Scales
Dice
Dominoes
Cooking (measuring cups, measuring spoons)
Clocks
Telephones (warning: if you allow your children to play with telephones, you always run the risk of them making a long distance call to HI! that's actually happened to us!)
Math Language (I started talking to JP with phrases like, "take one away", "add one", "how many groups of two?", "all together", "less than or greater than", "taller or shorter" etc, etc...
ETC, ETC, ETC!!!

Wherever you look, there are numbers, shapes, measurements... Wherever you look, there is math! :-D
